Cole Stamper has spent the last 23 years working as a mason, but he has only just begun to push the limits of his abilities.

Stamper, a native of Owen County, is employed by a Lexington-based firm. About five years ago, he took an interest in bricklaying competitions, and he claims he has been attempting to win one ever since.

“It’s really hard,” Stamper admitted.

Stamper and his competition partner Jeff Becker qualified for the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 in Las Vegas by winning a regional tournament in August. On January 19th, the nation’s best and brightest winners gathered to do battle.

The objective is to lay as many bricks as possible as quickly as possible with as few mistakes as possible.

“You have a mason and a tender that supplies me with the mortar and the brick. We have it set up and we start with. And once they say go, I start laying, and my tender, Jeff Becker, he’s out of Dry Ridge, Kentucky. He keeps the mortar coming to me and keeps my brick moved up. And we try to work together to make it all happen,” Stamper admitted.

The twosome triumphed to achieve their goal. In one hour, they racked up 760 points on no fouls.

Stamper remarked, “It’s very difficult because you’re moving so fast that there’s a little bit of luck involved, but that’s why you practice, to get your rhythm, your strategy, if you will, and just go through those motions and hope it all works out.”

Stamper took home the grand prize of the title “World’s Best Bricklayer,” along with a brand new Ford F250 and other goodies worth thousands of dollars. According to Stamper, it was an unforgettable experience.

Stamper remarked, “It was amazing. You know, it’s something I’ve been working towards or trying to do for a few years now. And just to have it all come together is amazing, just an amazing feeling.”

Stamper has been submitted into other contests, but he is putting off considering this for the time being.

“Right now, I’m gonna try to let this soak in that I won it, and enjoy the new truck that I won,” Stamper admitted.
