President Biden stated on Thursday that Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House’s chief deputy press secretary, will take over for Jen Psaki as White House press secretary, effective immediately.

Psaki will be leaving the White House on May 13th, and it was widely anticipated that she would be leaving. The president’s policy and communications goals will be the focus of Anita Dunn’s return to the White House as a senior advisor, a position she previously held as a key Democratic adviser.

Ms. Biden said in a statement that she “brings the experience, talent, and integrity required for this difficult job,” and that she “will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people.

In addition to serving as a substitute for Psaki at the White House briefing room lectern and fielding questions from reporters aboard Air Force One, Jean-Pierre will be the first African-American to hold the position of White House press secretary.
