Tragic Air Collision: 3 Lives Lost in Riverside County’s Fiery Helicopter Incident

Sunday night in Riverside County, two firefighting helicopters crashed in midair while responding to a brush fire. Three persons were killed. The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. in a remote location near Pipeline Road and Apache Trail in Cabazon, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The Morongo Casino Resort & Spa is approximately one mile from the accident site.

The three victims included a CAL FIRE division commander, a CAL FIRE fire captain, and a contract pilot, according to a press conference held by authorities on Sunday evening. Their names and ages were kept confidential. During the midair collision, one helicopter was able to land securely with no injuries, whereas the second helicopter crashed, killing everyone on board. According to officials, the collision caused an additional four-acre scrub fire that was later extinguished.

CAL FIRE Mourns Loss of Brave Personnel

An earlier structure fire near Broadway Street and Esperanza Avenue had spread to a 20-acre blaze known as the Broadway Fire, which was being fought by fire personnel. Both helicopter personnel were contracted by CAL FIRE to combat fires throughout the state. A spokesperson for CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire stated, “I would like to extend our deepest condolences and sorrow to the families and coworkers of the personnel.” This was a terrible tragedy for the community. We contemplate how this impacts the communities. 

They have lost three exceptional people, including three fathers, three spouses, three friends, and three sons. While their sacrifice should not be futile, we want everyone to know that we are thinking of them and will support them.” The investigation into the crash’s circumstances continues. Officials have confirmed that the helicopter that was involved in the accident was a water-dropping aircraft. The National Transportation Safety Board has assumed responsibility for the investigation. More information is anticipated Monday morning.
