According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, a lady in South Carolina was detained on narcotics and weapons charges after officers allegedly discovered that she was carrying roughly a kilogram of fentanyl.

Abernathy is being held without release after being charged with trafficking fentanyl, meth, and having a weapon while committing a violent offense. More than 46.4 million fentanyl tablets and 6,900 pounds of fentanyl powder were reportedly taken off the streets in 2023, causing 204 million deaths, according to the DEA.

Carlos Macci, a senior drug dealer who was detained in connection with The Wire actor Michael K. Williams’s death, received a two and a half year prison term in July. After ingesting heroin laced with fentanyl that he bought from Macci’s Brooklyn crew, the actor passed away in 2021.

After Williams experienced a deadly overdose, according to the prosecution, Macci and three other defendants continued to distribute heroin laced with fentanyl.

According to the CDC, fentanyl is one of the most hazardous drugs on the market and a “major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses” in the United States.

According to the DEA, the synthetic opioid is approximately 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, and only two milligrams of fentanyl have the ability to kill an adult.
