Top 5 Most Dangerous Places to Live in the US in 2023
The five US cities with the highest risk of violent crime have been identified, and the worst among them may surprise you.
According on proportional crime rates, Bessemer in Jefferson County is currently the most dangerous city in America to live in.
Out of every American town with at least 25,000 residents, Security Gauge ranked the top 100 most dangerous places to live.
From all 18,000 local enforcement agencies in the US, they compiled information on violent crimes such as homicide, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault in each municipality. Per 1,000 people, the numbers are contextualized.
Bessemer, Alabama
The top-ranked city in 2023 was Bessemer, which had 33.18 violent crimes for every 1,000 residents.
According to Security Gauge, there is a one in 30 risk that a violent crime may affect a resident of America’s most volatile municipality.
Bessemer, which has a population of about 27,000, has a substantially higher crime rate than other cities with a comparable population.
It scored particularly poorly for crimes involving physical force, property crime, and auto theft.
Monroe, Louisiana
According to Security Gauge, Monroe ranks second on the danger scales with a one in 38 chance of turning into a victim of violent crime.
The city, which is located on the Ouachita River in northern Louisiana, is home to about 47,000 people.
It seems surprising that a city with numerous museums and the University of Louisiana at Monroe would come in second.
However, a review of FBI statistics reveals that it has one of the worst murder rates in the country and was formerly the most deadly city in the country until Bessemer overtook it this year.

Saginaw, Michigan
Saginaw, which is located 100 miles from notoriously criminal Detroit, has a violent crime rate of 25.1 per 1,000 population.
It recently grabbed news after a rowdy, unlicensed street party that was documented on social media left at least 15 people injured and two people dead.
Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis, Tennessee, which has the same crime rate as Saginaw, is tied for third place.
Memphis, which sits on the Mississippi River and has a population of about 700,000, is well-known for its rock and roll music culture and Elvis Presley.
It also came in the top 3 for America’s homicide hotspots, with academics attributing the rise in homicides to Democratic government that is soft on crime and low police morale.
Detroit, Michigan
The violent crime rate in Detroit, which is home to 620,000 people, is 23 per 1,000, meaning that there is a one in 43 chance that a local may become a victim.
Rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a dangerous weapon, were among the violent offenses monitored.
Due to urban degradation and a declining population, Detroit is frequently listed as one of the most violent cities.
