Top 10 Safe and Exciting Destinations for Solo Female Travelers in the US

When Tammie Bernard and her six-year companion ended their relationship earlier this year, she realized she needed to flee.
“I found myself solo again and needed to get away and clear my head and heal my heart,” said Bernard, 59.
As a distant worker, she and her companion used to travel every winter, and she realized that she could easily do it alone.
The Kentucky resident began making arrangements to visit a friend in Kansas, followed by her sibling in Oregon. A friend suggested TrustedHousesitters, an online community that connects vetted travelers with owners requiring someone to monitor their homes or pets while they’re away, because Bernard now had a reduced budget. As a dog enthusiast, Bernard appreciated the pet-sitting aspect.
Bernard fell in love with solitary travel immediately and has never looked back. She has pet-sitting travels scheduled for the remainder of the year and is considering international stays to investigate potential retirement locations.
Exploring the US alone
Bernard is one of many women who travel alone. According to a 2022 survey, an increasing number of women are interested in packing their bags and traveling the road on their own.
Personal safety is a significant source of hesitation for women, and with good reason. The survey respondents, who were themselves solitary female travelers, suggested that first-time solo female travelers take a vacation within their own country.
According to TrustedHousesitters’ new 2023 Solo Female Travel Report, the platform saw a 193% increase in women booking solo overnight accommodations from 2021 to 2022.
For the report, TrustedHousesitters researchers determined which U.S. states are ideal for autonomous female travel. A spokesperson for the company stated that they considered factors such as extant travel statistics among female travelers, crime statistics, community welcoming surveys, and a measure of women’s safety for each state from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security.
Northeastern states, which are home to endearing villages and breathtaking nature, top the list.
Angela Laws, TrustedHousesitters’ Head of Community, stated, “The Northeast region is a perfect place for women who want to travel solo, and with a pet-sitting platform, they’re able to live like a local, explore nature, or work from home in local residences with the delightful company of a pet.”
According to TrustedHousesitters, these are the top ten states for women traveling alone.
1. Vermont

Vermont topped the list of states for female travelers traveling alone. According to Laws, over half of all overnight reservations in Vermont are made by women traveling alone. Why is readily apparent. The state has the highest concentration of museums per capita, as well as awe-inspiring mountain vistas and pristine lakes for hiking. Ben & Jerry’s Factory is located in Waterbury, which is an added benefit.
TrustedHousesitters discovered that Vermont is one of the safest states for women, with the lowest rate of violence against women and the highest rate of women who feel secure there.
