Some Us Residents Can Enter the Nation Even Though Their Passports Have Expired | Latest Update

If your passports have expired, certain American Americans living or traveling overseas will be permitted to return home.

Citizens who meet certain conditions will be allowed to return to their home country using expired passports before March 31, 2022, according to a letter published by the US State Department on December 28.

There are, however, a number of requirements.

For one thing, not every US passport that has expired will be accepted as a return document. This exception applies to Americans who are already overseas and returning to the United States (rather than leaving the nation and moving somewhere else) with passports that expire after January 1, 2020.

Furthermore, only a few types of passports are valid. The expired document in question had to be an original 10-year passport, with the exception of individuals under the age of 15 at the time of issue, who were granted five-year passports.

These passports must be in the owner’s custody and must not have been changed.

Americans who meet these requirements are allowed to return to the United States or a US territory until March 31, 2022. Because certain places don’t have direct flights back to the United States, short layovers are permitted.

This is the second time this week that important passport news has been released.

The price of a new US passport increased by $20 on December 27, rising from $110 to $130 for a 10-year certificate.

In a tweet, the State Department stated, “The higher charge is required to guarantee we continue to create one of the world’s most secure travel and identification papers.”

The backlog in passport renewals caused by the epidemic is possibly one reason for the expired passport amnesty. Americans should expect a passport renewal to take between eight and eleven weeks, according to the State Department’s website, though they may pay a $60 charge to speed things along.

However, officials from the government have acknowledged that wait times have been larger than typical in the last two years.

“That covers our processing time, the first internal intake of the applications, and mailing,” Rachel Arndt, deputy assistant secretary for passport services, said at a news briefing this summer. For both new and renewal applications, this was true.

She believed that 1.5 to 2 million passport applications were still pending at the time.

Americans traveling overseas whose passports expire before January 1, 2022, aren’t entirely out of luck. People who have lost or stolen their passports, as well as these citizens, can apply for an emergency passport that will allow them to return to the United States.

Anyone documents, however, will only be valid for one return trip to the United States, so those who obtain them will have to go through the normal passport application process.

Americans are advised to contact the nearest US embassy or consulate for more specific queries, according to the State Department.
