Rats Run Rampant in Florida’s Dirtiest City, Officials Scramble to Control Infestation
Many people believe that cleanliness is crucial to their health. For instance, more than 50% of respondents to a January 2023 Waycroft survey stated that their residence was either frequently clean or always clean.
And according to a spring 2022 study by Study Finds, 78% of respondents believed that the cleanliness of their home directly affected their wellbeing.
Finding out that one of Florida’s communities was not only ranked its dirtiest but also the most likely to be subject to rat infestation may upset Floridians who value cleanliness like those highlighted in the aforementioned studies.
Miami: Florida’s Dirtiest City?
House Fresh examined sanitation-related complaints in significant cities in August 2023 to identify which were seen as the “dirtiest” in America.
No cities from Florida appeared in the top 10. (The top three were Baltimore, Sacramento, and Charlotte.)
Miami, however, finished in 18th position, just after New York. In Miami, there were 3,284 complaints.
And it’s true that a few factors could have affected Miami’s rating. Miami Beach attracted notice a few years ago as it battled the problem of sewage pouring into the water.
The New York Post also noted in June 2023 that some Miami residents were experiencing sewage problems as Miami-Dade County switched certain residents from septic tanks to county infrastructure.
The county may run out of room for trash by 2026, according to a research it commissioned. Furthermore, some of the county’s landfills are almost full.

Why Miami Is Supposedly the Florida City Most Prone to Rat Infestation
In mid-August 2023, the website Pet Gnone conducted an analysis of major cities to determine their susceptibility to rat infestation by taking into account elements like locals’ dissatisfaction with garbage collection, accessibility to exterminators, and the density of restaurants per square mile.
This analysis placed Miami, Florida, in eighth place overall, just below San Francisco.
In an odd move, Florida Panthers hockey supporters toss plastic rats onto the ice after games. When Panthers player Scott Mellanby discovered a rat in the locker room at the previous Miami arena, this custom was born.
Contradictory Information: While Miami was not the dirtiest city in Florida, according to a prior poll, House Fresh, which measured the dirtiest cities, Miami was.
Lawnstarter did a similar survey in February 2023. According to that study, Fort Lauderdale was the filthiest city in Florida, followed by Orlando and Tampa.
