Rams quarterback Stafford is back in the concussion protocol and won’t play on Sunday.
After going back through the NFL’s concussion protocol, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will miss his second game in three weeks.
Sean McVay confirmed that quarterback Matthew Stafford will not play when the Rams (3-7) visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. However, the coach said that his Super Bowl-winning quarterback might not have a concussion.
Instead, McVay described Stafford’s injury as a “neck issue.”
Stafford’s latest setback and the loss of key defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson for the season because he tore the meniscus in his knee are the latest bad news for the Rams.
Stafford left the Rams’ loss at New Orleans early last Sunday when he felt numbness in his legs following a hit in the third quarter. Stafford has been checked out by doctors, but they haven’t decided yet if he got a concussion. However, McVay said that Stafford is still back in the protocol because of how he left the game.
McVay said, “We’re going through all of that and making sure everything is in order.” “There are a lot of different parts to it, but you want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to figure out what caused that feeling and let the experts give their opinion, look at the MRI and those scans, and give us the right information so we can move forward with him.”
Stafford missed the Rams’ loss to Arizona two weeks ago after going into the protocol the first time. Still, the Rams haven’t said for sure if Stafford got a concussion in that situation either.
McVay said Stafford and the Rams haven’t decided whether the quarterback could go on injured reserve or even be shut down for the season. After Sunday, Los Angeles will have only six games left and will have a hard time making the playoffs.
The Rams are uncertain about who will play quarterback Sunday when they face the Chiefs.
Most of the snaps in practice will go to third-stringer Bryce Perkins because backup John Wolford is still hurting from the neck injury that kept him out of last week’s game at New Orleans. Case Cookus, who grew up in Thousand Oaks and most recently played in the USFL, was added to the practice squad to add depth.
Stafford is one of the NFL’s quarterbacks who has lasted the longest over the past 12 years. Before he missed the game against the Cardinals, he had only missed eight games in that time span. All of those were in 2019 with Detroit, when he hurt his back.
Robinson got hurt against the Saints, which ended his season. Because of this, he may have played his last game for the Rams before free agency. Robinson left Detroit in 2020 and signed with the Rams. He was a key part of the Rams’ defense against the run and played in all 21 games as they won the Super Bowl.
Robinson’s absence and the Rams’ decision to release linebacker Justin Hollins a day early mean that the LA defense will have to make big changes before it tries to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. In Robinson’s absence, defensive linemen Marquise Copeland and Bobby Brown will play more, and Terrell Lewis and possibly Michael Hoecht, a 310-pound defensive lineman with good speed, will take over Hollins’ role of getting in the way of the quarterback.
McVay said that the Rams let go of Hollins and their leading rusher, Darrell Henderson, to give other players a chance to play ahead of the two soon-to-be-free agents who aren’t likely to come back. Henderson was taken by Jacksonville, and Green Bay took Hollins.
Cam Akers and Kyren Williams, a rookie who just got back from a long injury absence, will be the top running backs for the Rams against the Chiefs. The Los Angeles offense when running the ball is ranked 31st in the NFL.
The offensive line for the Los Angeles Rams is still having trouble because of injuries. On Wednesday, center Brian Allen (thumb) and left tackle Ty Nsekhe (knee) both missed practice. McVay said he thinks Nsekhe, who is the Rams’ third different left tackle to start this season, will be able to play on Sunday.
