There have been protests at the US-Canada border crossings over vaccination requirements and other concerns, and a White House official told CNN that the administration of Vice President Joe Biden is “very actively” monitoring them.

“Companies and sectors across the board have been affected by these changes. The Department of Homeland Security, the National Security Council, the Department of Transportation, and the National Economic Council are working together, including with their Canadian counterparts at all levels, to quickly develop a set of options that match current industry demands, including alternative routes and other scenario planning, “the official explained.
Canadian truckers have been protesting for over two weeks against a new law requiring them to be completely vaccinated against Covid-19 or risk a two-week quarantine in their homes after returning across the US-Canadian border. Others have united to protest the country’s anti-Covid-19 prevention efforts, such as mask mandates, lockdowns, gathering restrictions, and so on.
There have been protests around the country, notably at the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit and is the busiest international crossing in North America. Idling trucks and cars created gridlock on both sides of the border for the third straight day on Wednesday.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke separately with their Canadian counterparts on Thursday morning, “urging them to use Federal powers to resolve this situation at our joint border and offering the full support of our Homeland Security and Transportation departments.”
According to the White House, Biden’s homeland security advisor, Liz Sherwood-Randall, will also call with her Canadian colleague this evening.

American automakers, shippers, businesses and trade associations, labor unions, and agricultural organizations are also “in close communication” with administration officials about the roadblocks.
When it comes to the Ambassador Bridge obstruction and other ports of entry, “we are particularly focused,” stated an official.
There was “higher than normal traffic” in the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which connects the United States and Canada beneath the Detroit River, but the White House said Thursday afternoon that the detour port — Port Huron, Michigan — which is north of Detroit, was “fully operational,” despite the Ambassador Bridge being closed as of that point in time.
The Department of Homeland Security is aware of reports that a similar “Freedom Convoy” event will take place in Washington, DC, next month, and “is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the convoy does not disrupt lawful trade and transportation or interfere with federal government and law enforcement operations and emergency services.”

According to a report by CNN on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security has warned that the convoy might cause traffic problems around the Super Bowl on Sunday in Los Angeles, as well as in other major US cities. The official stated that the department is “increasing its Incident Command Post workforce.”
