Jimmy Buffett, the vocalist and songwriter of “Margaritaville” and dozens of other beachy soft-rock compositions, has passed away at the age of 76, according to a statement posted on his website and social media.

Jimmy died peacefully on September 1st night, surrounded by his family, friends, music, and canines, according to the statement. He lived his life like a song until his final breath and will be sorely missed by so many.

The statement included a photograph of Buffett sitting in a yacht on the water in casual attire.

The cause of mortality was unknown.

Buffett only had one pop success, “Margaritaville,” but his music earned him generations of devoted admirers and spawned a business empire that made him one of the wealthiest celebrities in the United States.

Buffett began his career in Louisiana as a country vocalist and street performer in New Orleans. In 2017, Buffett and Tracy Smith of CBS Sunday Morning visited the French Quarter, where Buffett stated that the city was instrumental to his career.

“Those years being here really were formative years for me, and it made me a better professional player so I thought I could make that leap and all of this was my training ground for all of that,” he said, adding that he believes his success “probably would not have occurred” if not for New Orleans.

Jimmy Buffett, the vocalist and songwriter of “Margaritaville” and dozens of other beachy soft-rock compositions, has passed away at the age of 76, according to a statement posted on his website and social media.

Buffett spent decades touring after the success of “Margaritaville,” and he utilized his commercial influence and the support of his rabid “Parrotheads,” or fans, to merchandise his music, establish a chain of Margaritaville resorts and restaurants, and create a lifestyle brand. According to Forbes, Buffett’s net worth was greater than a billion dollars, and each of his concerts reportedly garnered more than a million dollars.

Buffett continued touring through 2023. On his website, his final tour date is listed as a performance in San Francisco on May 6, 2023. Two weeks later, he canceled impending South Carolina tour dates in late May. Buffett stated at the time that he was hospitalized for “issues that required immediate attention.”

“Growing old is not for sissies, I promise you,” he wrote at the time.

Buffett leaves behind his wife, Jane Slagsvol, two daughters, Savannah Jane and Sarah Delaney, and a son, Cameron Marley.
