Google announced today that it is extending its generative AI search experience to the first countries outside the United States, beginning with India and Japan. The new AI-powered search feature, also known as SGE (Search Generative Experience), will become available in these markets via Google’s Search Labs and will introduce a new feature designed to make it simpler to find information in its AI-powered overviews.

SGE was announced for the first time at this year’s Google I/O Developer Conference in May. It adds a conversational mode to Google Search that allows you to pose queries about a topic and receive answers, similar to an AI chatbot. In recent months, the company has added support for videos and images, local information and travel suggestions, as well as new tools to provide summaries, definitions, and more assistance with coding-related queries.

In an effort to monetize on the new real estate dedicated to the AI chat experience, it also began experimenting with advertisements that would be integrated alongside its AI-generated responses.

As a result of the global expansion, SGE is being adapted to the newly supported regions.

In Japan, users will be able to utilize generative AI in their native tongue, whereas in India, users will be able to switch between English and Hindi using a language toggle. It is also incorporating voice input, which is popular in India, so that users can verbalize inquiries rather than type them and then listen to the responses.

And in both nations, search advertisements will continue to appear in designated ad spaces across the page.

Alongside these launches, SGE is introducing a new feature designed to make it simpler for users to find and visit the web pages that support the information provided by the AI.

Beginning today, users will see a new arrow icon next to pertinent information in AI-powered summaries, which they can select to access the relevant web pages. This enables them to directly access the source of the AI’s information in order to learn more about the answers to their queries. The United States is the initial market, followed by India and Japan in the weeks that follow.

Since the introduction of SGE, the company has discovered that the feature is more popular among younger consumers. Google reported that those between the ages of 18 and 24 who prefer to pose queries in a more conversational manner have the highest satisfaction rates.

Google also reported that people enjoyed being able to ask follow-up questions and that they are now asking longer, more conversational, full-sentence inquiries. This differs from traditional Google searches, in which users simply enter a few keywords to initiate a query.

It also asserted that consumers found the integrated advertisements beneficial, but did not provide data on click-through rates.
