Chinese Americans’ Displeasure with Home Country
According to a national survey, most Asian Americans have good sentiments for their ancestral homes, with one significant exception: Only 4 out of 10 Chinese Americans reported having a favorable opinion of mainland China.
Just 14% of Asian Americans who were not from China had favorable opinions of that nation. More than 7,000 Asian Americans participated in the Pew Research Center survey, which was conducted between July 2022 and January 2023. It focuses on the opinions of Asian Americans with ancestry in seven specific countries: China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Only the Chinese and Vietnamese Americans have a higher favorable opinion of other nations than their own: Asian Americans with Chinese ancestry had more good perceptions of Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan than of their own country, whereas Vietnamese Americans had more positive perceptions of Japan than of their own country.
According to the poll, 41% of Chinese Americans had favorable opinions about China. Six in ten Vietnamese Americans have a favorable opinion of Vietnam. The opinions of Chinese Americans regarding China were likewise not a surprise to Russell Jeung, a professor of Asian American studies at San Francisco State University in California.

Chinese Americans’ Perception of Mainland China
According to studies, the vast majority of Americans have a negative opinion of China. Religion also affects how Chinese Americans in the United States perceive mainland China, according to Jonathan Tan, professor of Catholic studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
According to him, almost 40% of Chinese Americans are Christians. In China, at least 5% of people identify as Christians. Respondents’ evaluations of their ancestral countries were generally higher than those of respondents from other Asian nations, with India exhibiting the biggest disparity.
While 76% of Indian Americans expressed a favorable opinion of their country, only 23% of other Asian Americans did, representing a 53 percentage point difference.
