A 23-year-old Man Was Arrested After Reportedly Driving Through the South La Carnival

Los Angeles: A 23-year-old man is being held on felony hit-and-run charges after reportedly driving a car through a carnival in South Los Angeles on Saturday night, but investigators say the situation could have been far worse.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Steven Weems was attempting to elude officers who attempted to pull him over at East 36th and Trinity streets.

Officers stated that when they attempted to approach Weems, he took off, eventually plowing into the fairground.

Seven persons were hurt in total, with at least six of them being transferred to local hospitals with “non-life threatening injuries.”

According to witnesses, Weems drove through a barricade on Trinity Street, damaged at least one of the amusement rides, and destroyed other property such as Laura Zazueta’s pop-up tent, which was selling merchandise at the carnival.

According to Zazueta, she has lost so much merchandise due to damage that she has established a GoFundMe campaign.

“We were standing right there and heard a tremendous impact like a car went through,” Janeth Renega said. Renega stated that the scenario was traumatic for her 4-year-old daughter.
