On Sunday, a Precision Air-operated Tanzanian commercial airplane crashed in poor weather in Lake Victoria, killing 19 people.

Kassim Majaliwa, the country’s Prime Minister, stated that officials think all bodies have been found in the jet.

“We’re beginning to remove the baggage and personal stuff from the aircraft.” “A team of physicians and security personnel have begun the process of identifying the deceased and notifying their families,” Majaliwa said.

In an updated statement issued on Sunday evening, the airline confirmed the death toll and reduced the number of survivors to 24. Earlier, both the carrier and local authorities stated that 26 of the 43 persons on board had been rescued.

“Precision Air expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the passengers and crew members involved in this unfortunate occurrence.” “The firm will make every effort to offer them information and any assistance they may require during this difficult time,” the airline stated.

“The names of the passengers and crew on board the aircraft will not be revealed until all next-of-kin have been notified,” the statement continued.

The airplane, which had 39 passengers and four crew members on board, had taken off from Tanzania’s commercial city of Dar es Salaam and was headed to the town of Bukoba when it crashed into Lake Victoria as it prepared to land.

Onlookers on the shoreline of Lake Victoria captured video of the aircraft immersed in the water, with emergency personnel coordinating rescue efforts from surrounding boats.

Precision Air CEO Patrick Mwangi was visibly upset when he spoke to the media in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

Mwangi’s voice trembled and he had to pause to wipe away tears as he said that the plane had taken off about 6 a.m. local time and was scheduled to arrive in the northern lakeside town of Bukoba around 8.30 a.m.

“However, at 8.53 a.m., our Operations Control Center received a report that that aircraft had not arrived,” he stated on television.

The crash is thought to have occurred on the final approach to the airport, whose runway begins directly close to Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake.

Local officials speculated that the tragedy was caused by terrible weather, citing heavy rain and strong gusts in the area at the time.

To interact with the passengers’ families, the regional airline has launched a Crisis Management Center and information centers in Bukoba and Dar es Salaam.
