A man is on trial in Hamburg for allegedly using an axe to sever the head of his 100-year-old grandmother as she cowered in her wheelchair.

After being attacked in March by her 37-year-old grandson Artur B, retired farm worker Amalie G was discovered dead in her flat in the German city, according to investigators.

Following his detention, Artur consulted a psychiatrist and claimed he was having difficulty managing the care of his wheelchair-bound grandmother who had dementia. According to the German publication Bild, Artur had been treated and given medication for psychological issues.

However, a family member said to Bild that Artur, a former soldier, was referred to as the black sheep of the family and that Amalie frequently complained that he was robbing her.

After calling the police to report his offense, Artur was detained.

A man is on trial in Hamburg for allegedly using an axe to sever the head of his 100-year-old grandmother as she cowered in her wheelchair.

Amalie tried in vain to protect herself with a cordless vacuum cleaner but was struck 16 times by the weapon, according to the coroners, and she died when a single blow severed her spinal cord.

Preliminary postmortem findings indicate that a cervical cord severance brought on by sharp and blunt impact was likely the cause of death. Following the homicide, chief public prosecutor Liddy Oechtering stated that an axe discovered at the scene was the suspected weapon of choice.

The neighbor claimed that although Artur usually visited to take care of his grandma, the two constantly quarreled and that their arguments were frequently audible to bystanders.

Relatives theorized that the conflict on the night of the murder worsened because of a disagreement over money. Police were summoned by Artur, who allegedly claimed he had beheaded his grandma. At the bloody crime scene, an axe was found.

The public prosecutor said that Artur B had no criminal history when questioned by Bild.

The Hamburger Abendblatt said that the individual was only suspected by police of minor offenses, none of which involved acts of violence.

On Monday, Artur will give a testimony in front of the Hamburg court.
